The Memorial Stadium Company has proposed a wide ranging £35 million refurbishment of the Memorial Stadium, bringing it up to an 18,500 all-seater capacity. On January 17, 2007, Bristol City Council granted permission for the stadium redevelopment.
The new stadium will include:
An 97-room hotel
99 student flats
A restaurant
A convenience store
Offices
A Public Gym
On August 17, 2007, it was announced that the stadium’s redevelopment had been delayed and would commence in May 2008 and finish in December 2009. During this time period of reconstruction, Bristol Rovers will ground share with Cheltenham Town Football Club. The Section 106 legal agreement, which was the main cause for the delay in the redevelopment, was finally signed on 4 January 2008, but more delays were encountered when on 30 May 2008 Rovers admitted that their preferred student accommodation providers had pulled out of the project, leaving the club to find an alternative company. This caused the redevelopment to be put back another year, to 2009.
Pubs to visit:
The Beehive (Wellington hill West). A favourite with many. Richard the landlord is a big club fan, so you can be sure of a warm welcome. About 10 minutes from the ground
The John Cabot (383 Gloucester rd). The Cabot is a dark but cosy pub, adorned with seafaring artefacts with a good selection of beers and the option of food. About 10 minutes from the ground
Naval Volunteer (King St - City centre). One of Bristol’s more famous establishments, the Volunteer is an old and welcoming drinking hole covered with golden oak panelling, two minutes walk from the bus to the ground.
Restaurants:
The Blue Goose. This Egon Ronay blessed eating-house do a fine line in new world food, in light and airy surroundings. (344 Gloucester rd) 0117 9420940.
The Firehouse Rotisserie is based near the docks, in Bristol City centre. The west-country based chain (they have a restaurant in Bath) specialise in their highly acclaimed American cuisine. (Anchor Square, Harbour side) 0117 9157323.
Bristol Rugby’s pasties. A strange choice we grant you, but the pasty shop next to the Centenary stand makes a terrific Cornish meal.
From the North, West and East: Whether you’re coming from east or west exit the M4 at junction 19 and join the M32. Travel along the M32 for 3.1 miles until you reach junction 2 - here, exit the motorway and take the third exit signposted Horfield and Southmead and follow the road through a division and a roundabout both of which have clear signs reading Memorial Stadium. Once through this area you join Muller Road and should continue to drive along it for 1.4 miles until you come to a signal-controlled crossroads.
Signposted right is Horfield Health Centre and Library. Proceed through this junction and up to the next set of lights where you should turn left into Filton Avenue where the ground is located almost immediately on the left.
From the South: Exit the M5 at junction 16 signposted A38 Thornbury and Filton. At the roundabout head right signposted A38 Filton and join the A38. Travel along the A38 (Gloucester Road) for 4.3 miles as you enter the outer suburbs of Bristol. On your trip you’ll pass Filton Airport on your right, the Royal Mail sorting office, an American Golf retail outlet on your left and the Royal George and Wellington pubs.
At a set of traffic lights with an ATS Tyre Outlet on the left, take the left filter onto Muller Road. Proceed down Muller Road to the traffic lights where the right hand filter leads onto Filton Avenue where the ground is located almost immediately on the left.
Parking: You’ll be extremely lucky if you can find a space on Filton Avenue unless you arrive a couple of days in advance. All of the areas around the ground are residential and you’ll have to battle for spaces with the locals as well as other home and away fans. With very few exceptions, finding a space within a five to ten minute walk is relatively easy - parking on Muller Road is a popular choice as is Gloucester Road although this is often more difficult. If Muller Road and Gloucester Road prove full then there are many other roads across the other side of Gloucester Road - travel past the Wellington pub along Kellaway Avenue and you’ll find another area of roads often used for matchday parking.
Please be aware that if you park illegally on Horfield Common, there is a strong probability that you will be clamped. The release fee is £100.
Rail: Take the Rail Link bus from Temple Meads station to the city centre. From here you can catch a bus to the ground.
Bus: Numbers 73,X73,75,76, and 77 all pass the Memorial Ground, and can be caught either at the main bus station or opposite the Cenotaph in the centre. Get off at Churchways Avenue on the Gloucester rd, the trip should take 20mins.
